It never really ended, it just went more underground, but I think you are referring to the Chicago gangs of the 1920's. The beginning of their end was the St. Valentines Day Massacre, which so outraged the public that huge pressure was brought upon politicians and law anforcement to crack down hard. That did not end the gangster era, but it did lame it. The death blow, however was the repeal of prohibition in 1932. The beer barons and rum runners were out of business when there was no longer any markets for them to supply.
