I once asked a cellist this at school, and he replied that a d minor is used (rather than just an A) because the fifth between the strings on a violin/viola/cello is slightly larger than the fifth given on a piano. While yes, the open fifth is larger by 2 cents give or take when using just temperament, I can't imagine how a d minor triad helps at all. I would think that by providing the fifth from D to A on a piano (mean temp), it would inhibit getting the slightly wider open fifth all string players tune to.
I'm offer it up to anyone else. Does this guy's answer make any sense to you? I've often wondered what the benefit is to using a d minor triad. Everyone else has just told me "Because I heard someone else do it." Even some pretty established conductors ...

You need to tune your guitar in a wierd fashion: Tuning: D D (Tune it up to D) D (Tune this one down) D D (Tune this one down also) B (Tune This One Down too. it will be a little loose but that's how it is!) Be careful when tuning the B string up to D - it might snap. It's easy to play once you tune your guitar like this. You can also play it with standard tuning (Chords for verses are are D, Em, G, Bm, A, G) but it doesn't sound good - you need all the Ds to ring out to produce the haunting feel of the song. look on ultimate guitar.com, tab version 4 (the one with the 5 stars), to see how to play it.
