The reason they wore gas masks is because they weren't sure weather the Nazi's would drop gas bombs as they did in WW1
Those were the cops in gas masks showing up as they saw the number of people there. But During the three days of the Woodstock festival, there were no reported incidents of violence among the half-million people in the audience.
First of all, the band is called MY Chemical Romance. Second, they wore the masks because it represented war. All the debris and smoke and stuff could get into the soldiers' masks so therefore there was gas masks.
