Strictly speaking, you don't need them at all. There is a style of music called acapella which is strictly voice. The main reason that people use accompaniments is that most people do not have superior voice command and cannot carry the song on the strength of their voice. In order to properly sing acapella, you must have the discipline to hit the notes perfectly, sing on key, and have the phrasing of the melody down perfectly. The group Rockapella is an excellent group to listen to in order to hear how it's done. As a side note, the "drums" in the group is actually a singer himself. There is absolutely no Musical Instruments in their performances.
