Beyonce entered various singing and dancing competitions when she was a child, and was enrolled by her parents at a series of elementary and high schools that specialised in music and the performing arts. She also sang in the gospel choir at their local church. As a girl of 12, she and her friends Kelly Rowlands and LaTavia Robertson auditioned for an eight-piece girl's rap & dance group, which was called 'Girl's Tyme'. They greatly impressed a record producer called Arne Frager, who made a special trip to see them perform in Houston, Texas and later invited them to cut a demo. record at his recording studio. He was keen for them to aquire a major record deal, so arranged for them to appear on the national TV talent show Star Search, which at the time was the main such show in America. 'Girl's Tyme' didn't win due to having chosen a poor song to perform- nonetheless, it's key members refused to give up. The group was eventually slimmed down to four members, and changed it's name to 'Destiny's Child' in 1993- they spent four years touring on the road before ultimately securing a record deal with Columbia in '97. The rest, as they say, is history!!
