Diana Ross and The Supremes are important because, at a time when African-Americans were rarely featured on American television, their charm, grace, style and unique talent, all best represented by the group's lead singer, Diana Ross, appealed to people from all backgrounds and placed them on television almost as often as The Beatles, if not more so.

The group's visibility shattered pre-conceived notions of what it was supposed to mean to be a Black woman and her "place" in the world, inspiring generations of young people of both genders, all colors, etc., to believe that they, too, can achieve their goals and succeed, regardless of supposed barriers.

Also on television, Diahann Carroll's portrayal as a nurse on her prime-time comedy, Julia, performed the same function, as did the success of fashion models such as Donyale Luna and Naomi Sims.
