Why is choir considered lame in high school?

Not all teens think choir is lame in school. If you watch "American Idol" a few of the people have been in choir at church mostly. Choir can certainly help someone with a good voice. Personally, when I took it at church in the early 1950s I sounded like a ruptured frog and they put me in the back of the choir so the stronger voices would drown me out! LOL It's usually because the kids aren't interested in the songs in choir and want their own up-beat music such as Pop Music or rap. They have their favorite performers and would rather do something like that. It varies from program to program and school to school. In many high schools, freshman are required to take some sort of 'arts' class, typically the choices are band, orchestra, art or choir. Those that play an instrument are covered by band or orchestra. Many are interested in the art classes, by default, those in choir are there because they have little or no interest in art and little musical talent, but are fulfilling a requirement. It is considered by many to be a 'easy class' with lots of opportunity to goof off and by lazy. So you have a group that has those that got 'stuck' taking the class and those that really want to take it. Never a good mix. In other schools, where there are tryouts required to participate in certain levels of choir, the group can be quite good and earn respect for their abilities. These individuals want to be there, adding a whole new level of ability and skill.
