A "brass instrument" is often defined as a musical instrument in which sound is produced by the vibration of lips. Our friends over at Wikipedia define a brass instrument "a musical instrument whose tone is produced by vibration of the lips as the player blows into a tubular resonator." This is exactly how sound is produced with a trumpet.
