In numerous Music Videos and performances - most famously his performance of 'Hound Dog' on the Milton Berle show - Elvis would use dance moves in which he vigorously moved his legs and his knees. This of course cause movement of his pelvis and hips. This was sometimes considered offensive and said famous 'Hound Dog' performance on Milton Berle was the landmark of 'Elvis the Pelvis'. Many viewers found it offensive and when he appeared on the Steve Allen show later on that year, Allen made him perform a much more 'appropriate' song (I want you, I need you, I love you) in a tux, without any hip movement. Allen wanted to present Elvis on his show as "The new-improved Elvis Presley" Elvis swallowed his pride, did the bit and left. That's where 'Elvis the Pelvis' came from.
