Keith Moon was one of the great drummers of the British Invasion of the 1960s/70s. His frenetic style of playing, including a complete disregard for his drum kit, was spectacular to watch. He added a tremendous amount of "punch" to The Who songs far and above simply keeping rhythm. He was also one hell of showman. His nearly acrobatic style of playing influenced a great number of drummers from the 1970s to present. Besides, it was great fun watching him trash is drums at the end of set. His name was also really cool!

Go hit YouTube and look for pre-1976 The Who videos to see Keith Moon in action.

Surely you're joking. Keith Moon played drums for a very long time with a little known band called The Who. When he wasn't trashing his drums, wrecking hotel rooms, driving cars into pools, dressing in drag and just being generally insane; he was forever altering the way people thought about music. He is, without a doubt, the best rock and roll drummer of all time. You should listen to The Who some time. It's certainly better than the trash they call music nowadays.
