The Beatles were a phenomenon for the 60's. They were very different than their peers because they were not dancing suggestively (Elvis), nor were they encouraging rebel behavior (Buddy Holly).

For parents of the generation that made the Beatles huge, these young men were clean cut, nicely dressed, and they didn't pose a threat with their music. The music (our parents thought) was simple, sweet, and innocuous enough for young girls.

What our parents didn't know was that the lyrics WERE suggestive to our young minds. Those "clean cut" boys were awfully cute, they were MEN, and they sang about girls our age. We went nuts. There were four of them, they sounded great, our parents liked the music and they bought our tickets for the concerts. You could pick the one you wanted to have a crush on and no one was angry.

For the young girl of the 60's, an idol crush was safe. Her mom had crushed on Frank Sinatra and she was none the worse for it, so we had Mom on our side. Daddy would fork over the money for princess to be happy, so we decorated our rooms with memorabilia, fan magazines, cut our hair to imitate the Beatle Bob, and bought the whole Carnaby Beat.

The Beatles were the vanguard of the British Invasion. We loved the idea of a "culture" that we could understand but that had a "foreign" accent. For the average mid-teen, London was a dream, a fantasy of romance and daydreams. A British accent was just different enough that an American girl could still understand, but at the same time could be swept away on a fantasy of mystery. We bought the whole package: clothes, perfume, accent, boots, accent, mini skirts (hoo boy, did Daddy get upset), accent.

So the Beatles took the American female teen-buying public by storm. Their early popularity among young teens gave the band the impetus to branch out with intricate rhythms and embroideries on their music that gave serious musicians great pleasure. Their later works were thoughtful, elegant, and very well crafted.

From early success with simple pop ballads that took the Americas by storm to their later works that impressed serious musicians, the Beatles were a phenomenon that was very different by the standards of the day. Their work changed the face of popular music then and laid the groundwork for pop music to become a serious genre. Much of their work has echos today, over 40 years later in today's pop, neoclassical, and even hip-hop music.

Their legacy has been massive. Much of the 80's music was a direct result of the Beatles' work. The intricate melodies, the orchestration, and especially the crafting of lyrics all had their beginnings with the Beatles. The music that the Beatles made under the workmanship of Paul McCartney and John Lennon is now classic. It is worthwhile studying.

George Harrison's answer to this question was, "We're only 5'11, ya know."
