I have had this problem frequently in the past and haven't gotten much of a straight answer from Verizon who I use for my carrier. The best explanation I've gotten is that since Verizon and AT&T are two different wireless standards (CDMA vs. GSM) text messages cannot be sent directly from one phone to another without first being translated. I was told that there are large servers somewhere that do the work of translating the text messages and sometimes get backed up, usually depending on the time of day. Sometimes the translating servers get so backed up that they just start to drop certain messages and so they get lost, never to be delivered. I'm unsure of how true this is, but it sounded reasonable enough to me, I heard it from an employee of a Verizon store who said he sees the problem frequently. As far as I'm concerned, it's beyond frustrating and something that needs to be fixed ASAP. It's pretty stupid that I pay for text messaging that I can't really use whenever I need it. If anyone else knows something about this, please let us all know. Thanks!

The iMessage app allows users to automatically send SMS text messages for "free" as long as you have a paid plan with a local provider such as ATT, Verizon, or Sprint.
Yes, you can flash a Verizon phone to ATT. However, you will also need to insert a Verizon SIM card into the ATT phone in order for it to properly work.
You can't use Verizon service on ATT phones or any other GSM phones. Verizon runs on a different frequency, which ATT phones do not support.

Alot 0f the features are the same when it comes to Verizon and ATT. Verizon though does offer an unlimited data package whereas ATT gives you different tiers to choose from. Also Verizon has a significant amount less of dropped calls.
