Possibly a clutch failure or bearings on the pulley assembly. This tends to be a common problem. Check for blackish coloured dust particles around the commpressor, that's a sure sign that the clutch is going or gone. You should be able to replace the whole clucth assembly if that is the problem. Otherwise the compressor is starting to fail in which case it's a very expesnsive fix. Replace the commpressor, which in itself is easy enough but the system must first be evacuated of refrigernat, the compressor replaced along with the accumulator to have a valid warranty on most compressors. Then the system must be evacuated for air or moisture and then refilled with refrigerant. this get upwards of 1000 bucks at a shop and most DIY's don't have the equipment to evacuated and refill the system.
i will make this simple. as a mechanic, i can make a living just working on jeep grand cherokees.
Roughly 2000 Some Cherokee (and other tribes) chose to stay in their homeland and in the case of the Cherokee, became 'citizens' of the state where they were located as to avoid being relocated. Some went to Oklahoma and then returned because they didn't like the conditions there. The choice was to stay and become an 'American Citizen' or be removed.
They are located at the beginning of the exhaust just below the body of the car. They are easily found by following the pipe coming off the manifold, they actually look like mini mufflers and may be in any shape.
Try wjjeeps.com . This web site tells you everything about cherokees. I wanted to change my factory radio but I found out that it's better to keep it and just buy a converter. they give you a web site to buy all the things that you need to switch everything over
The length of a song can vary significantly, but if we assume an average song is about 3 minutes long, then 2000 songs would be approximately 6000 minutes. This is equivalent to 100 hours. However, if the average song length is different, the total time would adjust accordingly.

I had a similar experience with my Windstar - lots of pad material left, but still grinding after new pads & shoes. Turns out the rotors were bad. :( Btw, I just replaced the rotors without finding out if a simple turning would have eliminated the grinding.
Most likely loss of refrigerant.
