I think this is actually a reasonably involved question - because it is very difficult to answer without first hearing your voice. That said, though - I'll do my best. To define your voice as "not good" means one of (at least) three things:

1. You are singing with improper technique, and therefore, even though you are singing on pitch, your voice is not producing a sound that is pleasing to the human ear.

2. You are singing with proper technique and pitch but the sound that your voice is producing is a sound that is not pleasant to your ear.

3. You are singing with proper technique and pitch but the sound that your voice is producing is a sound that is not pleasant to other people's ears.

Without knowing you, it is hard to say which is which... but I can comment on all three of these and hopefully you'll be able to tell which suits you the best.

1. So... I could literally go on about vocal technique for an entire book. Obviously, that wouldn't work here, and it's been done a million times before... but I can definitely tell you three of the most important things I've ever learned about vocal technique. Before I get started, though, can I just say that most (seriously, like 90%) of all "vocal teachers" are not vocal teachers? They are repertoire coaches. They will help you learn a song and give you some half-cocked pointers on how to sing, but when it comes to actually building you to become a unique and developed singer, they are useless. I can't even tell you how many "teachers" I would love to go back and give a peace of my mind to because I have only realized now how little they knew for how much they charged. It's sad. Anyway, here we go: Ideally, the only things that you want to control about your voice are the things that should be in your control. I know that sounds funny, but it is true. These three core, foundational things about your voice should not change, no matter what else is going on. Unfortunately, in times of stress they also happen to be the first things that seem to go out the window.

a. Keep your throat relaxed. You should be able, while you are singing or speaking, to lightly hold your throat in your hands and gently move your voicebox side to side. There shouldn't be any resistance there. If your throat is rigid and tube-like, then you are killing yourself vocally. You voice will eventually get exhausted and burn out, and then your sound will deteriorate.

b. You should not hold any unnecessary tension in your jaw, your tongue, your neck, your shoulders, or pretty much anywhere else for that matter, because that tension adds up to you eventually getting tired and then your voice falling apart. This is why it's so hard to not screw this up when you get stressed (like right before you perform on stage in front of 500 people) because when you get nervous, you tense up like a coiled spring. The more you perform in front of people the more this will disappear.

c. You shouldn't sing through your nose, and you shouldn't sing from deep in your chest. You want to find a nice, happy, balanced place where you get the nice resonating quality from both your chest and your nasal passageways.

These three things, as simple as they may sound, have made a world of difference in how I view vocal instruction. I never realized that I had these bad habits myself until after I spent years trying to figure out why I had a fantastic voice as a kid and lost it as I got older. I used to sing freely and for fun when I was a kid - so my voice just did what it wanted to. As I got older I said "I want to sound like that guy" and slowly tore my voice apart. Now that I realized the cause of my problems, I've fixed them and my voice is back. It's such an enjoyment to just enjoy singing.

2. Do yourself the favor of realizing that the most famous and recognizable voices of popular music since the dawn of recording have made it that far because they were unique. They all had something specific about the quality or delivery of their voices that was particular to them and gave them the chance to stand out in a crowd. On one end of that spectrum you have singers like Nat King Cole who, while being incredibly unique can be regarded as a "singer with a beautiful voice" and on the other end you could have someone like the lead singer of Disturbed (name is escaping me right now) who, while exceptionally unique and talented, might not be singing "Unforgettable". Both of those singers are ridiculously good at what they do... but you'd be hard pressed to find too many Nat King Cole fans who think that the guy from Disturbed should put out a Christmas album. What I'm saying here is "be true to yourself". Cole wouldn't have had a career if he had tried singing Metal, and ditto in the reverse for the guy from Disturbed. Now, the hard part of this is (of course) actually being true to yourself. As we grow and listen to music around us we are continually shaped by the voices that we hear. As a result, we may have a preconceived notion of how we would like our voices to sound, regardless of how our voices want to sound on their own! Bob Dylan couldn't sing "Old Man River" and sound like anybody but Bob Dylan. And did he have a "great voice"? It's debatable... his voice is certainly incredibly recognizable, and has sold millions of records, but what makes somebody a singer? Get all of the ideas that your voice has to do what you tell it to out of your head. Your voice is like a fingerprint. It is unique to you and you should celebrate that instead of trying to hide it. It just might make you famous!

3. Ah, this one is no fun. Some people, through no fault of their own, simply do not have pleasing voices. Please take into account what I said above... I'm not going to tell you what a "pleasing voice" is. I like Nat King Cole and Disturbed and Tom Waits and Martin Sexton and a ton of other crazy singers who are completely unlike each other but who are all phenomenal in their own right. It's all a matter of taste, and for whatever voice you've got, there is usually some type of music that suits you and some type of audience that wants to hear it. But in relatively rare cases, nobody wants to hear you. And for those cases? I say sing anyway. We sing because it makes us feel good - and no one should ever take that away from you. And who knows? Maybe the reason no one likes your voice is because you are so unlike everyone else that no one even understands how to appreciate it yet!

What are some good singing tecniques?

There are a vast amount of singing excercises you can do to improve your voice. Breathing plays an EXTREMELY important part in singing! Try picking a note and then, while standing, sing the note for as long as you can, first getting louder gradually, then getting softer. Do this 4 times a week and time yourself each time. You'll find it works a charm! Then theres increasing your note range try singing some scales... Depending on your preference to sing higher or lower increase or decrease pitch of scale... do try notes that you find difficult but do not stretch your voice too far as it can lead to loss of voice or even severe damage of vocal chords... Singing should not be forced it should feel comftorable...

How can you tell the difference from singing from your throat singing from your chest singing from your head and singing from your stomach?

When you sing from your stomach or rather your diaphragm, the sound is usually stronger and your chest doesn't hurt as much. Usually you do that when singing a long phrase or loudly so you don't run out of breath. When you sing from your throat...actually, I don't think your supposed to sing from your throat unless you're singing quietly; because you sing with your "head voice" to keep the high notes in pitch, and you sing with your diaphragm to have more....control, power, whatever you want to call it.

How can you tell if you have perfect pitch?

It is quite easy to tell if you have perfect pitch by having any musical instrument, such as a piano, clarinet or an electronic keyboard, if you know that the pitch of the notes produced by the instrument are correct, and not out of tune. Simply hum or sing any note, and try to guess what the note is, eg D. Then play a D on the instrument; if the pitch is the same, you have perfect pitch. Try other pitches by singing or humming, play the note you are singing and see if you've guessed the pitch correctly. If you are still guessing correctly, you have perfect pitch, and if you don't guess correctly you haven't.If you strike out more batters than Nolan Ryan

When a tuning fork and a note are sounded together why do you loosen the string?

The purpose of a tuning fork is to know the exact pitch of a certain note, and then tune to that note. The string is probably loosened to match the pitch of the tuning fork.

How can I improve the control over my pitch when singing I'm a bass-bariton and I find it easier singing in-tune in falsetto than my chest voice it feels like I have less control over it?

You might not be a bass-baritone. If it's easier to sing higher than, you might be a tenor. As for the fact that you don't have control over pitch......That's something you can work on. There are a few websites you can go to. Just Google search "control over pitch." Good luck!
