Budgies or Budgerigars are also known as the common pet parakeet. Budgie is their informal nickname. They are birds and like all parakeets eat seeds, fruits, insects and berries. Because they eat both plants, but also eat insects, which are technically a meat, these birds are omnivores, but if you have one as a pet it is much easier to feed them seeds, fruits and berries.

In their native habitat of Australia they eat bark, local insects, local flowers such as thistles and fruits.

If you have a Budgerigar as a pet they should be fed with good quality, commercially available pellet food. You can also give them fruits and raw vegetables (in small quantities and once ever few days or they will get diarrhea. Such include apples, sweet potato, salad cress, grated carrot, grapes, pumpkin, winter squash, broccoli, parsley, spinach, mango and papaya.

For more on what Budgies eat and what to feed them check out the list of books mentioned below and the links in the sources section. All books can be found at any local library in the Pet or Animal section.
