Opossums very probably would drown while playing possum. The O'possum clan are the Irish branch of the Possum family and like most Irish cannot swim (the water in Ireland is far too cold to ever learn).

Seriously, these marsupials don't play possum unless the opossum is in imminent danger; then they play dead very realistically until the predator gives up and goes away. This is a survival characteristic of the Virginia opossum, and to the best of my knowledge they don't do it in water. If they did, they would undoubtedly drown.

Australian possums don't play dead; they just run away, instinctively heading upwards where the means, such as a tree, is available.

does a possum carry newborns in a pouch or have a nest?

A possum, specifically the Virginia opossum, carries its newborns in a pouch. Female opossums have a marsupial pouch where the tiny, underdeveloped babies attach to a teat for nourishment and continue to grow. After they outgrow the pouch, the young may ride on their mother's back while she forages for food. Opossums do not build traditional nests; instead, they often use dens or burrows for shelter.

Does a possum eat turtles?

No. Possums have no interest in harming desert turtles or any other living creature. However, there is a misconception that "possums" are the same as "opossums". The two animals are quite unrelated. Possums belong to the family Phalangeridae, while opossums belong to the order Didelphimorphia. In North America, the term 'opossum' is often shortened to 'possum', but the animals remain quite different species. There are no true possums in America. If the question refers to "opossums", opossums are omnivores and will eat both animal and vegetable matter. They are also predators of other animals like birds, lizards, rodents and even tortoises if they are small enough for the opossum to kill.

What type of possum lives in the Piney Woods of TX?

No possum lives in that region. The Virginia Opossum can be found there. Some believe that possums and opossums are both the same animal. This is quite incorrect, however. The "possum" of North America is just a shorter name for an opossum, but true possums are different from opossums, and not related at all, except by virtue of both animals being marsupials.Possums belong to the family Phalangeridae and order Marsupialia, while opossums belong to the order Didelphimorphia, although they are also marsupials.True possums are only found in New Guinea, Australia (including Tasmania), Sulawesi (Indonesia) and a few other small islands in the Pacific region, such as New Zealand, to which they were introduced.

How do opussum protect themselves and what body part?

The phrase "Playing 'Possum" comes from the opossum's way of protecting themselves. Playing possum means to play dead. A 'possum will lay still in hopes an animal will not attack it since it's dead (many animals won't eat prey unless they catch it alive). While playing dead, a possum will secrete really bad smelling fluid from it's anal glands.

Many people confuse opossums with possums.Possums are different to opossums, and not even closely related at all.Possums belong to the family Phalangeridae and order Marsupialia, while opossums belong to the order Didelphimorphia, although they are also marsupials. Therefore:True opossums are found only in North America, although there is a "water possum", also known as the yapok, which is found in central and South America.Possums are found in New Guinea, Australia (including Tasmania), Sulawesi (Indonesia) and a few other small islands in the Pacific region. Although not native to New Zealand, the brush-tailed possum was introduced into that country over a century ago and has subsequently become a pest.

When do opossums get their teeth?

The type of teeth a possum has depends upon the species. To begin with, possums are not opossums, and vice versa. They are completely different animals. Most possums have quite strong teeth, flat like the teeth of herbivores and fructivores. Like other members of the order diprotodontia, they have grinding teeth and canine teeth. The honey possum, on the other hand, has one pair of sharp, pointed lower incisors, while both upper and lower jaws contain just rudimentary teeth which are similar to the canies and grinding teeth of other non-dasyurid marsupials.

What 5 senses are weak in a possum?

Opossums have relatively weak vision and hearing compared to other mammals; their eyesight is limited, making them more reliant on their other senses. Their sense of taste is also not particularly strong, as they have fewer taste buds. While their sense of smell is decent, it is not as acute as that of some predators, making them less effective at locating food through scent. Overall, vision and hearing are the most notably weak senses in opossums.
