Used Cooking Oil as Subtitute to Diesel
Abstract
This study, Trans-Esterified Used-Cooking Oil as Substitute to Diesel, aims to produce a diesel with physical properties comparable to commercially produced diesels. The researchers surveyed the top three oil products that public utility jeepney drivers use: Caltex, Petron and Shell.
The biodiesel was produced through a process called trans-esterification. It makes methyl ester from the used cooking oil that is similar to the complex hydrocarbon chains of petroleum products. Glycerine and soap are the byproducts of this process. A percent yield of 73 percent makes the product relatively good for economic distribution.
Introduction
The Philippines is actually rich in energy resources. Filipinos are still seeking for the proverbial pot of gold, not knowing that this black gold is sitting in their own backyard.
And so, the researchers thought of using a material abundant in the home-used cooking oil to develop fuel for cars. The researchers would also want to know the feasibility and usefulness of used-cooking oil as a car fuel.
Herbal Mosquito RepellentA mosquito repellent lotion from the leaves of atis (sweet sop) was invented by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD). PCHRD is one of the five sectoral councils of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), according to them, the atis lotion mosquito repellent was created using the extracts of atis leaves mixed with other locally accessible materials. According to PCHRD, the atis lotion is made of 10.125 percent mineral oil, 1.02 percent sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, nine percent propylene glycol, 0.22 percent methyl paraben, 0.135 percent propyl paraben, 70 percent water, and 10 percent plant extract.Atis leaves, unripe fruit, and the seeds of atis (Anona squamosa) contain vermicidal and insecticidal properties. It is an inexpensive alternative in avoiding mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and filariasis.
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is mandated to: provide central direction, leadership, and coordination of all science and technology activities in the country; and, formulate S&T policies, programs, and projects in support of national development priorities. The Department through the years: 1958 - Congress passes a law establishing the National Science Development Board (NSDB) upon the recommendation of Dr. Frank Co Tui, who was tasked to survey the state of Philippine S&T during the Garcia administration; 1982 - NSDB revamped as the National Science and Technology Authority (NSTA) and accorded broader policy-making and program implementing functions; 1987 - NSTA elevated to Cabinet level and becomes the DOST in response to increasing demands for S&T intervention in national development. In the 90's, DOST's overall mission is embodied in the 1990-2000 Science and Technology Master Plan (STMP) that shows the direction and desired goals of Philippine S&T for both the public and private sectors. The Medium-Term Plan of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), for the period 1999-2004, outlines DOST's programs and projects in pursuance of the vision of a competent and competitive science community with a social conscience.
Most weather occurs in the troposphere, the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere. This layer extends from the surface up to about 8 to 15 kilometers (5 to 9 miles) high, depending on geographic location and weather conditions. The troposphere contains the majority of the atmosphere's mass, including water vapor, which is crucial for weather phenomena like clouds, rain, and storms.

I recently spent money on detergent to unclog my sink. It was money down the drain.Footnote:In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Act III scene 2, the Nurse brings to Juliet news of Romeo's death. Juliet, not sure of the nurse's message, punning on "ay" (yes) and "I" (reference to herself) says,What devil art thou, that dost torment me thus? This torture should be roar'd in dismal hell.Hath Romeo slain himself? Say thou but "ay,"And that bare vowel "I" shall poison moreThan the death-darting eye of cockatrice:I am not I, if there be such an "ay";Or those eyes shut, that make thee answer "ay."If he be slain, say "ay"; or if not, "no":Brief sounds determine of my weal or woeAnd I say also unto thee, That thou artIn Matthew 16:18 of the Christian Holy Bible, Jesus says to Peter,Thou are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church...The pun is on the name Peter and the reference to "rock." "Peter" is from Latin Petrus, earlier from Greek Petros, literally, "stone, rock."If you prefer a less literary example, my favorite would be:Q: What's the difference between a bird with two wings and a bird with one wing?A: It's a matter of opinion.
