Assess for fracture
2Immobilize the injury. Any movement will be very painful and can worsen the injury.
3Disinfect at least a liter of water - depending how large and dirty the wound is - using iodine tablets.
4Clean the wound by thoroughly rinsing it with the disinfected water, using an irrigation syringe.
5Realign the fractured bone, unless it's a wrist or shoulder fracture
6Clean and dress all wounds
7Remove tight clothing, watches, jewelry: anything that could impede circulation.
8Check circulation, sensation and motion beyond the fracture site.
9Splint the fracture
10Re-check circulation, sensation and motion beyond the fracture site.
11Elevate the fracture 6-10" to reduce swelling.
12Apply cold packs or ice to the fracture as long as there is no risk of hypothermia or frostbite.
13Monitor and treat for shock
14Give ibuprofen if pain is persistent and there are no signs of shock.
15If possible, administer oral antibiotics if more than three hours from a hospital.
16Evacuate
Amethyst fractures are breaks or fissures in the crystal structure of an amethyst gemstone. These fractures can affect the overall clarity and appearance of the gemstone, reducing its value. It is common for amethyst to have fractures, which are often filled in with other minerals or glass during the gemstone's enhancement process.
The rock fractures you are describing are likely joint fractures. Joints are natural cracks or fractures that develop in rocks due to stress or cooling. When joints occur in parallel sets along flat surfaces, they are known as sheet joints or exfoliation joints.
Plaster of Paris was first used for the treatment of fractures in the early 19th century by French military surgeon Dominique Jean Larrey. The technique gained popularity due to its effectiveness in immobilizing and supporting injured limbs during the healing process.
In rock masses, the stress distribution can significantly influence water flow in fractures. When rock stress increases, it can cause fractures to close or reduce their aperture, impeding water movement. Conversely, if stress decreases, fractures may open, enhancing permeability and allowing for greater water flow. Additionally, the interaction between stress and the orientation of fractures can further complicate flow patterns within the rock mass.
Fractures in the lithosphere are primarily caused by tectonic forces, which can result from the movement of the Earth's plates. These forces create stress and strain in the rocks, leading to fractures when the stress exceeds the rock's strength. Other contributing factors include volcanic activity, which can introduce additional stress, and the cooling and contraction of rocks. Additionally, human activities such as mining or drilling can also induce fractures in the lithosphere.
