no it does not make it greater nor fewer inside the cell membrane it's because difussion keeps on going till equilibrium happens. moreover the process difussion allows solutes to be transferred from the more concentration to the less concentration like what happens in glucose between a cell and blood. :)

Which term refers to the diffusion of water throughout a membrane?

Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a membrane (semipermeable) membrane. Water always moves from a high concentration of water to a low concentration of water.

Which term refers to the diffusion of water molecules through a slestively permaeable membrane?

The movement of water through a selectively permeable membrane is called diffusion. Water will always diffuse down a concentration gradient, from high solute concentration to low solute concentration.

When there are different amounts of a substance on either side of the cell membrane what gradient results.?

It is known as a concentration gradient which in diffusion will always flow from areas of high concentration to areas of lower concentrations.

How do small molecules pass through the cell membrane?

There are three types of transport for molecules across the cell membrane. 1 - Diffusion - Molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration 2 - Osmosis - same idea as diffusion, but refers to the movement of WATER across a selectively permeable membrane. How can you change water concentration? Add a solute. If you have 2 250 ml beakers, connected and divided by a selectively permeable membrane, and one beaker contains a salt solution, the salt solution is "hypotonic" (hypo- less, tonic - water) to the water filled beaker. One will see a migration of water into the salt solution beaker. BOTH diffusion and osmosis rely on concentration gradients to perform their jobs. They always want "equilibrium" between both sides of the membrane. 3 - Active transport - Proteins embedded in the cell membrane move large molecules through the cell membrane or AGAINST the concentration gradient. The size one is obvious; If it's really big, it won't permeate the membrane. As for the concentration gradient, this means that it moves a molecule INTO the area with and already HIGHER concentration. If this happens with say... H+ molecules, it creates a potential difference - ie - Voltage across the membrane. Cellular respiration counts on this process to create ATP/Energy for the cell.

Does diffusion go from high concentration to low concentration?

Yes, they move from high, to low.

Is Diffusion always from areas of greater to areas of lesser concentration?

Yes, diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. This process occurs in order to reach equilibrium, where the concentration of particles is equal throughout the system.

Does diffusion always have to be though a membrane?

yes

What conditions are necessary for diffusion to take place?

The conditions necessary for diffusion is firstly a semi permeable membrane, and a concentration gradient for the movement of molecules from higher concentration to lower concentration. The size of the molecules should be small enough to pass easily through the membrane.

Is it from high concentration to low that particles move across a membrane move?

Yes. It is called Osmosis. Particles move across the membrane in order to balance the concentration of particles on both sides of the membrane. Since the membrane tends to block the larger particles, its the smaller molecules that move, so what happens across membranes is that the motion (of say water) is from low concentration toward higher - but the result is to even the concentration on both sides of the membrane, Pure diffusion is always from higher concentration to lower.

In facilitated diffusion which process does not require energy?

Simple and facilitated diffusion are a part of passive transport. This refers to the movement of molecules, atoms and ions across the cell membrane. In both of these processes, molecules move from areas of high concentration to areas of lower concentration because equilibrium is trying to be maintained in living organisms. Simple diffusion just happens randomly and without any aides. Facilitated diffusion uses proteins in the cell membrane to guide polar molecules and ions in and out of the membrane (always to areas of lower concentration) and DOES NOT require ENERGY.Only active diffusion requires energy.

The difference of diffusion and osmosis?

Osmosis takes place across a permeable membrane. The membrane seperates two compartments (for example, the inside of a cell from the outside), one of which has a heavier concentration of a solute (e.g., sodium or potassium ions) than the other. The solvent (usually water) travels across the membrane until the concentrations are at equilibrium. Diffusion is the passive scattering of a concentration of solute out into the solution. No membrane is required. It is just the second law of thermodynamics in action, that says that systems always act in such a way that order decreases and chaos, or entropy, increases. It proceeds until the solute has reached maximum dispersion. Osmosis is always the movement of water particles into and out of cells across the partially permeable membrane (or occasionally other semi-permeable materials). Any other substance being moved this way whether across a cell membrane or not is simply referred to as diffusion.
