As it is another item running off the engine of the car it takes some energy to power it which would have gone to turning the wheels. This means that you are using more fuel.

I have an aging Volvo V40 and when I turn on the air conditioning I immediately lose some power to the engine. When I am going up a steep hill I have to turn it off so that all of the power goes to driving the car forward and not keeping me cool.

I expect it depends on the manufacturer and age of the car etc. but I think it can reduce mpg (kpl) by about 10%.
