Almost all the African countries are famous for producing best quality gems. However, the top quality amethyst mines are located in Zambia. Brazil and Argentina in South America are the other places which have several amethyst mines, but the gem color is lighter. The other minor places where amethysts are mined include India, Canada, Madagascar, Mexico, Myanmar, Namibia, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.
Tanzania is closer to the Equator compared to Zambia. The equator passes through the northern part of Tanzania, while it does not pass through Zambia.

Zambia has substantial deposits of several gemstones - including Amethyst, Aquamarine, Garnet and Emerald - but production has always been bedevilled by the unreliability of internal transport and reliable access to trade partners. i don't know which is Zambia's major gem export - but you could probably find that out for yourself by contacting the Ministry of Mines. (Zambians for the most part are some of the most polite and helpful people in Africa).
Zambia is poor in large part due to the government nationalising the copper mines and subsequently completely mis-managing them.
Emeralds are typically found in countries such as Colombia, Zambia, Brazil, and Afghanistan. They are often found in sedimentary rocks or within metamorphic rocks around areas with high levels of hydrothermal activity.
Zambia was starting to be industrialised in the late 1920's . By then copper mines had sprung up along the copperbelt, eventually resulting in 6 or more deep shaft mines. After WW2 the mines had really started producing a lot of copper. At this time 'open pit' miing also got bigger. The construction of Kariba Dam in the 1950's meant much more power available for industry.
They can run out of ore, workers pay can exceed the value of what they mine or they can simply be mis-managed as the famous copper mines of Northern Rhodesia became when the country became Zambia and the government nationalised the mines.
It's now down about tenth. Before independence and Kaunda's 'nationalising' of the copper mines it was third in the world.
