There are 20 National Grasslands covering an area of just over 6,000 square miles in the US. Ther are much smaller than the National Forest system and the largest is the Little Missouri National Grassland in North Dakota covering 1,033,371 acres. Idaho, California and Oregon are represented, but most are in the Great Plains or the Great American Desert as it was once known.
