Helium balloons deflate faster because the molecules are smaller and can seep through the smallest of holes.

...

Except that this isn't what happens. Try inflating some latex balloons with CO2 (use a chemical reaction with baking soda to generate it) and compare them to helium balloons. It's amazing to see how quickly the CO2 balloons shrivel up.

Note: balloons made of mylar or other materials might behave more in line with theory, but CO2 escapes from latex balloons quickly.

Explain why helium-filled Mylar-foil balloons can float freely for several weeks but latex balloons for less than 24-hours?

Helium is not only very light, it is also monatomic, it's particles are all made up of a single atom. Air molecules, oxygen, and nitrogen mainly are larger and hevier and diffuse through much more slowly.

What does carbon dioxide do to a flame?

Oxygen is required to have a flame. If there is too little oxygen available, the flame will go out. Natural atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide have no effect on the flame. If the CO2 concentration is high enough, it can extinguish the flame by lowering the amount available oxygen e.g. covering a candle with a jar.

Which would diffuse faster Helium or oxygen?

Diffusion would happen quicker in gas because the particles in gas move at a higher rate than in liquid. Particles in liquid are also more uniform than that of gas deeming it to take a longer time to dissolve.

What make a molecule organic vs inorganic?

It is organic if the molecule contains carbon-hydrogen bonds. If none of these bonds are present in the molecule, it is inorganic.

Does a ball with helium go farther than a ball with air?

You can use the ideal gas equation to work this out. If the pressure, temperature and volume of the ball are both the same, then it's known that the number of moles of gas is going to be the same. Helium however has a molar mass of 4.0026g per mole whereas air (which is a mixture of mainly nitrogen, oxygen and argon) has a higher molar mass and so the ball would weigh more (by a few grams). Assuming no wind, the helium ball would travel further.

What does carbon dioxide do to flame?

It will 'smother' the flame, putting out the fire. It displaces oxygen because it is heavier than oxygen (44 g/mole vs 32 g/mole).

Does sprite have more carbon dioxide than coke?

Not sure. i was looking for an answer online when i found this question, but one thing is for sure, sprite bubbles atleast 2wice as much as coke. that goes for all clear soda's vs dark colas

How is breathing controlled in the body and related to homeostasis?

A+ Students - medulla oblongata Breathing is controlled by the brain stem, in the medulla oblongata. Breathing is important for homeostasis because the pH balance of our blood id about 7.3, just slightly alkaline. Breathing controls the amount of oxygen vs. carbon dioxide in our blood by releasing carbon dioxide in the lungs so it leaves the body when we exhale. If you hyperventilate, for example, you will build up too much carbon dioxide which will make your blood become acidic. That's why they have you breathe into a paper bag, so you don't take in any more oxygen and the red blood cells have room to carry the carbon dioxide to your lungs.

What are the reactants of respiration?

Photosynthesis and respiration go hand in hand. The reactants of respiration are the products of photosynthesis and vice versa.RESPIRATION-reactants: oxygen, glucose(sugar)products: carbon dioxide, water (yes water, just breathe on to your palm and feel your hand), ATP energyPHOTOSYNTHESIS-reactants: carbon dioxide, water, light energyproducts: oxygen, glucose(sugar)The only difference is the kind of energy that is taken in and released,ATP vs. Light

What is the role of open vs closed stomata in regulating gas exchange in plants?

Open stomata allow for the exchange of gases, such as carbon dioxide and oxygen, between the plant and the environment. Closed stomata restrict this exchange, helping to regulate the amount of water loss and gas exchange in plants.

How long can a balloon stay floating?

The length of time a balloon can stay floating depends on factors such as the type of gas used (helium vs. air), the size and material of the balloon, and environmental conditions (temperature, altitude, etc.). Generally, helium-filled balloons can stay afloat for around 12-24 hours, while air-filled balloons will eventually fall due to their weight.

Why is the slope of water negative?

For water the line has a negative slope (vs carbon dioxide). This explains why ice floats since volume decreases with increasing pressure as we move upward on the phase diagram from solid to liquid water, the volume occupied by H20 decreases and thus water must be increasing in density.

Is carbon dioxide a non renewable resources?

Fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) are non-renewable.They took millions and millions of years to form and are being used up in a time scale of hundreds of years. When they are gone, it will take millions of years again for the processes that create coal and oil to happen. When we use them, they are gone. This is the opposite of renewable sources of energy, like wind and solar, which can be used over and over.

Which element in each pair has atoms with a larger atomic mass?
