Radiocarbon dating is a technique that uses the decay of carbon-14.
carbon 14
Knowing the age of the rock the fossil was found in is important because the age of the rock and the age of the fossil are usually about the same.
Carbon dating can give an educated guess of the age of carbon tested and then be cross referenced with other fossil records. This is accepted by most, but not all, to be reliable.
Carbon dating techniques
Carbon dating is the first method which involves use of carbon isotope C-14. Another is determining the depth of the fossil.

I don't really know how it works or what it entails, but there's a process called carbon dating that's frequently mentioned to determine the age of various objects. I'm not sure exactly, but it involves determining the half-life of one of the elements in the fossil, and then determining how long ago it started to decay.

Scientists can use carbon dating to determine the age of a fossil.

They are looking for Carbon 14. Normal carbon is 12 but some carbon is an radioactive isotope called Carbon 14. Carbon 14 decays at a set rate. The amount left in artifacts that contain carbon can determine the age. Carbon-14 dating is a way of determining the found items up to about 50,000 years of age.
The two methods are "RELATIVE DATING" and "ABSOLUTE DATING". :)
