An enormous volcanic explosion could cool down temperatures for a wide surrounding area. This depends on the severity of thevolcano The reason being that if the volcano explodes, and not overflows, it will tear apart the upside of the volcano and spew hot ash into the sky. This will form a huge thick cloud, again depending on the severity, that can spread for miles around. This cloud will block the sun, trap everything underneath and prevent much wind currents because the sun cannot heat the land surface to cause updrafts and pockets of hot and cold air. Thus the cloud stays and kills all vegetation underneath , many animals and doesn't allow the sun to reach the surface. So the temperature drops.
