The shape of a molecule, or the geometry around an atom, is given pretty well by the VSEPR theory.

Imagine tying three balloons together. How would they sit in relation to that center? They will all point away from the center, as far apart from one another as possible, and will all sit in a common plane. This geometry is called trigonal planar, or sp2. It works the same way with the electrons around an atom. When there are three electronic domains tied to one atom, they will all point away from the central atom, they will sit as far apart as possible, and they will all sit in the same plane. Imagine an atom with a lone pair, a single bond, and a double bond. Each of these three electronic domains will repel one another, and give the atom a trigonal planar geometry.

What is the molecular shape of XeF6?

The molecular shape of XeF6 is octahedral. This shape occurs when there are six bond pairs and no lone pairs around the central xenon atom. The six fluorine atoms are positioned at the corners of an octahedron around the xenon atom.

Why is it important to find the perimeter of a shape?

To find the distance around the shape

What is the shape of the P atom in H2PO4?

It has 4 bonding pairs and no lone pairs so it has a tetrahedral shape.

The magnetic field around an atom is the shape of?

The magnetic field around an atom is typically shaped like a fuzzy cloud that surrounds the nucleus. This cloud represents the probability of finding an electron at a particular location in space. The shape of the magnetic field is influenced by the movement of electrons within the atom.

Where can you find the electron in an atom?

Orbiting around the nucleus.

What is SO42- molecular shape?

The sulfate ion (SO42-) has a tetrahedral molecular shape. This shape is formed by the central sulfur atom bonded to four oxygen atoms, with the oxygen atoms arranged in a symmetrical tetrahedral configuration around the sulfur atom.

Why if CO2 and H2O both have 2 atoms around the central atom are they not the same shape?

Because H2O has electron pairs on the O atom which repel the H atoms more and change it's shape. Their electromagnetic repulsion is stronger than a lone electron and they push the H atoms away
