Synthetic in general is denser then a natural stone of the same carat size but sometimes it's hard to compare stones if you don't have a real stone of equal carat size to weigh against. Not always true but this depends on the dealer but a good indication is price. You'll notice a tremendous price difference between synthetic and natural for the given carat size. One other method which should be considered as only secondary is a UV light test. This test use to be better validated but the lab experts of synthetic have gotten much better at perfecting the reddish-purpleish light that comes off a real emerald while under a UV light.
