its a bi-lipid membrane, so its two sheets of fatty acids back to back. there are also steroids intermixed in the membrane and receptors sticking out of the cell that activate upon contact with various chemical receptors. they "activate" in different ways, but basically they trigger different chemicals or enzymes to be formed inside the cell. im not sure what model is used, models are only made to simplify a problem, but scientists basically know how most cells work, so im not sure what model is needed. There is a mathematical model of water diffusion through cells. that's based on concentration of solute on either side of the cell wall.
