Ideal collection stations would be at high elevation far removed from forests, farm lands, or industrial areas. A desert, for example, would be a pretty good location.

Our earliest, most complete record was made at a station on top Hawaii's Mauna Loa. The air is carefully sampled, upwind of the person gathering the sample, in an evacuated bottle. The ratio of gases are then carefully measured.
