Dentists use chemistry to know what different chemicals relate to the mouth. An example is in the cranial nerves and what chemicals interact with what they can be doing. Knowledge of the chemistry of the enamel and how it will interact with compounds used in crowns, veneers and fillings is also a requirement for the modern dentist.

Also keep in mind that dentistry is a branch of medicine. To understand medicine including diseases related to the head and mouth, one must have a general understanding of both chemistry and Biology. Thus, both chemistry and biology are prerequisites to studying dentistry.
