Oil is formed from compression of wetlands (primarily). The plants are the source of the carbon (organic material) that, after eons of heavy compression, turned into the black ooze we call petroleum (oil of the rock? Latin, I think...) Without the sun, there would've been no wetland plants and thus, no petroleum. Therefore, the Sun is indirectly responsible for the energy released when we burn gasoline or fuel oil or coal.
