most condoms nowadays contain spermicide (genocide get it) so it kills sperm on contact. Since the condom is usually covered in it inside it tiny packaging,a good amount is also lubricating the walls of the vagina thus adding more protection. I believe sperm can only live 60 seconds outside the human body under normal circumstances....i.e, cryogenics,freezing and such preservation methods
