Because the island of Japan lies in an area where several plates meet, it has experienced frequent earthquakes.
Earthquakes are caused by the release of energy or seismic waves when these plates move.
See the related links below for a list of earthquakes that have hit Japan in the past. The most recent earthquake and biggest to ever hit Japan occured March 11, 2011 and measured 8.9 on the Richter scale.
In the past 100 years we have had nearly over 200 tsunamis have been recorded (only ones that caused some damage). Japan has suffered a majority of them.
There are currently over 80,000 missing persons in Japan, with many cases related to natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis. The Japanese government continues to work on efforts to locate and identify these missing individuals.
There are so many earthquakes in Japan because the country is in what is called the Pacific Ring of Fire which is an area where large numbers of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. The Ring of Fire has 452 volcanoes and is home to over 75% of the world's active and dormant. Another reason why Japan has so many earquakes is because there are so many different tectonic plates (layers of the earth's crust) underneath it and each plate keeps rubbing with the other plates. Earthquakes cause a bit of damage but not a lot in Japan, this is because they have happened lots of times so people in Japan have managed create buildings that probabley won't get destroyed by an earthquake. Japan also has an Earthquake and tsunami warnings which are basically alarms so they knew when an earthquake was happening. most houses in Japan are made out of cheap, light materials so they won't kill people who are inside.
The death number, as of March 17, is about 5,300 and over 8,000 are still missing. Most people believe the death toll will rise over 10,000 As of 03/18/11 the death toll was confirmed by police at 7,348
Japan has over 1500 earthquakes a year due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active region. Japan experiences both frequent minor tremors and occasional larger earthquakes due to the movement between tectonic plates in the area.
Earthquakes are not only in Japan - they happen all over the world. In the last two years there have been notable earthquakes in Japan, China, New Zealand and many other places around the world.
Mountain land and oceans like indian and pacific and has recent earthquakes over years 1995-2011.
Since 2003 there is at least one or two magnitude 6.5 earthquakes per year in Japan. Once every 10 years there is likely a magnitude 8 or higher earthquake often triggering a tsunami if deep on the ocean floor. Over the last 100 years the frequency of major earthquakes in Japan is increasing.
I lived in Japan for 4 years, but im not Asian, and i noticed when i lived there i went through so many earthquakes and its pretty isolated, not attaching to other countries. Also they over fish.

Japan has some kind of earthquake nearly every day most of which are small earthquakes. There are over 1,500 earthquakes per year in Japan. This is largely due to Japan being situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire which is a hotbed of seismic activity.
