People consider the Fourth of July a symbol of our freedom and if they think that if a lot of fireworks are not used, people would think something along the lines of weak fireworks, weak government, weak country. For countries where the Fourth of July is irrelevant to the nation, fireworks are an excellent form of public entertainment. Besides the value they have on their own, a fireworks display is a brilliant opportunity to have a small festival evening. The economic possibilities are huge: vendors and stalls, competitions and fundraisers form the local community, etc. What starts as a government presentation soons snowballs into a group effort; the returns a government often makes back from the events associated with the fireworks is usually enough to make the initial cost a low concern.
