The Tsunami of December 26, 2004 was triggered by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake off the west coast of Sumatra. In this area the India plate is sliding under the Burma plate. Over the course of many years stress built up at the site until the Burma plate slipped eastward. When this happen some of the ocean floor was thrust upward. This displaced a massive column of water and triggered the tsunami.
The first tsunami warning system was established in the Pacific Ocean in 1948, following the destructive tsunami that occurred in the region in 1946. The system was put in place to help detect and warn about potential tsunamis to minimize their impact on coastal communities.

On April 1, 1946 a Magnitude 7.8 (Richter Scale) earthquake occurred near the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. It generated a tsunami which inundated Hilo on the island of Hawai'i with a 14 m high surge. The area where the earthquake occurred is where the Pacific Ocean floor is subducting (or being pushed downwards) under Alaska.
