In 1999, a tragic avalanche on Baffin Island, Canada, resulted in the deaths of 8 people. The incident occurred on April 18, when a group of snowmobilers was caught in the slide near the community of Pangnirtung. This event remains one of the deadliest avalanches in Canadian history.
In 1999, an avalanche on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic killed nine people, including seven members of a British expedition group. The group was on a skiing trip when they were caught in the avalanche. The incident sparked controversy and led to calls for improved safety measures in polar expeditions.
The 1999 Baffin Island avalanche was triggered by a cornice fall, which is an overhanging mass of ice and snow breaking off from the edge of a ridge. This event led to a large slab avalanche as the snow fractured and slid down the mountain slope, resulting in a significant avalanche that tragically claimed the lives of seven climbers.
The Montroc avalanche in 1999 resulted in 12 fatalities and significant damage to the village of Montroc in the French Alps. This event led to increased awareness of avalanche risks and changes in safety regulations in the area.
Aside from the obvious (snow build up) there were a combination of events. the weather conditions and tempratures at the time (huge amount of snow deposits) and the previous months historical weather conditions and tempratures (melting freezing and fresh snow) causing a layer of unstable ice particles deep below the snow. The question should be what were the causes of so many deaths. Again there were a combination of events. 1. building of properties within the restricted areas of known avalanche risk 2. the avalanche committee ignoring the meteorological advisor's advice to evacuate the valley prior to the disaster, and by default trapping thousands of locals and tourists in the danger area to the point of rationing of food being enforced during the ensuing period. 3. tourist were still entering the valley when the warning had already been issued 4. whilst avalanches were happening daily in areas surrounding the village nobody considered the danger building directly above the village where no avalanches were occurring until it was too late. Having said all that many were very fortunate, as the area that was devasted was relatively empty of people due to the town council holding an entertainment event in the centre to maintain moral, some that lost their lives had unfortunatly left the event early and were exposed to the full force of the avalanche. Galtur has since had defence walls built with an integrated avalanche centre dedicated to the research of the cause and effect of the avalanche. It has to be said Galtur is such a wonderful village, with the most welcoming of local people and well worth a visit any time of year.
An avalanche occurs when a mass of snow falls down a mountainside. That is because new snow (which is not wet) accumulates on a more heavy snow layer. Since the new snow layer is not compact, it could slide down toward the base of the mountain. Avalanches could be triggered by loud noise (yells, firearm shots, etc.). Skiers, snowboarders and climbers could also cause an avalanche. There are two ways to reduce avalanche risks: by installing snowsheds or by triggering controlled avalanches. These protection fences are made of rocks, soil and other materials. They prevent avalanches to fill trails used by humans. Controlled avalanches cause the accumulated snow to fall down before it could trigger avalanches by itself. When nobody is in danger, explosives are used to produce a loud noise that causes an avalanche. Avalanches could be seen every winter in mountainous regions of Québec. Fortunately, they do not often occur near inhabited areas. During the winter, do not venture in the mountain without an adult. If you walk in a trail after a snow fall, do not walk in the middle of it, but rather on the side. Avalanches always fall down in the middle of the path; thus, if you are on the side, the risks of being hit by the avalanche are lower. * In 1999, an avalanche killed many people in Kangiqsualujjuaq, near the Ungava Bay in northern Québec. The avalanches occur as a result of the snow packed mountains become to heavy to support itself and therefore fall at the base of the mountain.

Harbour Island People Mover ended in 1999.
You took the information and put it on a chart. And that can mean either that you made a map of where you went, ("We charted our route from Baffin Island to Hudson's Bay") or presented a series of data in chart form ("Here we have charted the number of cases of pneumonia in France from 1900 to 1999").
