So, the sun gives off light because of the different types of gases in the core. These gases , when combined, create radiation. The sun gives off this radiation in rays, producing light rays, that comes from our sun and other stars.

-This all comes from a 8th grader.

Additional answer

The Sun is very very hot and hot objects, as you know by a red hot Poker, emit light and heat. So why is it hot. It's not the mixing of gases that does it, but the nuclear reactions going on. These reactions cause the Sun to loses mass at a stupendous rate (several million tonnes per second), and according to Einstein the amount of energy given off when mass is lost is also stupendous. So the Sun gets stupendously hot.

But the question asked how MUCH light is emitted by stars. This is presumably measured in photons and I don't know the answer.
