There is a fair amount of variation, but the standard small 16.4oz (1 lb) propane cylinder usually weighs just about a pound when empty (Tare weight, or the weight of the container itself). It is then usually charged with 16oz (by weight) of liquid propane for a total of around 32iz (2 lb).

In Summary

  1. Tare Weight: 16oz (weight of the container/bottle)
  2. Net Weight: 16oz (weight of the liquid propane fuel)
  3. Gross Weight 32oz (weight of a full bottle)
or in more practical terms, the closer your bottle is to weighing 1 lb, the closer you are to empty.

How much does a 30lb propane bottle fully filled weigh?

There will be a TW on the side of the cylinder this is the tare weight the weight of the cylinder empty. (TW 27) would be an 27 pound empty cylinder. A full cylinder will weigh 30 pounds more than the tare weight.

How do you tell when propane bottle nears empty?

All propane cylinders will have a TW stamped in the valve protection ring. The tare weight or TW is the weight of the cylinder empty. TW 18 would be a 18 pound empty cylinder. If you weigh a TW 18 cylinder on a bathroom scale, and it weighs 28 pounds there would be 10 pounds of propane remaining in the cylinder.

How much does an empty 30-pound propane tank weigh?

a typical steel "30 pound" liquid propane tank weighs about 25-28 pounds empty. propane tank markings (on collar) propane weighs about 4.125 pounds per gallon and a "30 pound tank" will hold about 7.5 gallons so a full tank will weigh about 55 pounds or so. Typical recertification stamp: MM XXX YY E MM -> 2 digit recertification month XXX ->3 character Re-qualifier's registration number YY -> 2 digit recertification year E ->States the cylinder has been externally examined WC -> Water capacity of the cylinder. TW -> Tare weight of the cylinder (what the tank weighs empty) ICC, DOT, BTE, CTC or TC -> Specification number eg. TC4BA240 10 89 -> Date of manufacture (October. 1989)

How do you determine weight?

You need a lot of gas to do this, but you start by weighing an empty cylinder. You then put a measured quantity of gas in the cylinder and weigh it again.

How much does a full 10 lb propane tank weigh?

Liquid PropaneThere will be a TW on the side of the cylinder this is the tare weight the weight of the cylinder empty. (TW 18.5) would be an 18.5 pound empty cylinder. A full cylinder will weigh 20 pounds more than the tare weight. Even with an OPD valve a 20 pound cylinder will still hold 20 pounds 95% of the time. If you exchange your tank they are only putting 15-18 pounds of propane in a cylinder that was designed to hold 20 pounds. If you have your cylinder refilled make sure they weigh it on a scale as they fill it and put twenty pounds in it the OPD SHOULD STOP THE PUMP AT THE SAME TIME THE SCALE TIPS.(The weight of th filling valve must be added usually 4-5 pounds). Also propane is stored in the tank as a liquid you use the vapor from the top of tank in your grill. As the vapor pressure lowers the liquid will boil into vapor when the vapor pressure is gone the cylinder is completely empty.A 20-pound tank contains about 4.1 gallons of LP, which weighs about 17 pounds. (LP has a specific gravity -- at 25 degrees C -- about half that of water.) The next time I run my tank empty, I'll weigh it. But I would be willing to bet it weighs about four pounds.

Why does an empty cylinder weigh less than a filled one?

Because it hasn't got any extra mass inside it.

How do you measure nitrogen gas in cylinder?

Using a pressure guage to determine the pressure of the gas inside, as thepressure decreases you can tell that it is getting empty. Another way is if you know the weight of the empty cylinder weigh the cyleinder and the difference gives you how much nitrogen is in it.

How much does a 47kg bottle of propane gas weigh?

It should weigh 45kg + the TARE weight of 36.6kg for the bottle = 81.6kg when full. The WC (water capacity) of the bottles are 109.8kg and LPG weighs 41% of water = 45kg. This is a good check to see if you are being ripped off by your gas supplier.
