The spot price of Rhodium sponge as of 6 August 2010 is US$2150 per once, which roughly equates to a price of $US4700 per Kilo. At No time in history has it been worth more than $US22,000 per Kilogram, and only then for a short time during it's historically greatest price squeeze. This happened at the end of the credit squeeze of 2008. It was also during power shortages in South Africa which virtually closed down platinum production. South Africa produces around 85% of the Worlds roughly 25 tons of annual Rhodium production as a byproduct of Platinum. The commodity was also at the end of a cyclical uptrend that was greatly exacerbated by speculation, on a readily cornered market. A case of the "perfect wave" being manipulated by unseen hands. I suspect that certain hidden hands were roasted into stumps during the fall of August to December 2008, when the price went all the way down to about $US 1760 a Kilo, (about 8% of it's July 2008 price). Ouch!, where have my hands gone. This commodity has been between 182, and 10,0100 dollars an once in the last 15years. Treat it with "asbestos" gloves

The above author is confusing ounces with pounds. The price of rhodium in Aug. 2006 was $2150 which means the price per kilo was about $70,000. Precious metal prices are almost always stated per troy ounce. There are 31.1 grams per troy ounce. Therefore the historically high price for rhodium was about $320,000 per kilogram. It is always better to just use troy ounces when dealing with precious metals.....then mistakes in conversion like witnessed above do not happen.

Is a rhodium plate watch worth anything?

Rhodium is one of the most precious metals in the world, recently selling at approximately 10 thousand dollars per ounce. Although prices fluctuate, a rule of thumb is that rhodium tends to be 10x as expensive as gold. But the rhodium is probably very thin. If the watch is rather old, the rhodium is probably a bit thicker than if it is new, but rhodium is so stressed that the plating cannot be really thick. The watch is probably worth more than the rhodium plating on it is worth.

What is Rodium?

According to WiseGeek, Rhodium is a silvery-white transition metal. It holds the distinction of being the world's most expensive precious metal. It has an atomic number of 45 and is about as nonreactive as gold. The only way to dissolve rhodium is with sulfuric acid. Part of rhodium's appeal comes from its high reflectance, almost unique among the metals. It is sometimes used as an expensive and flashy alternative to silver in jewelry, on which it is sometimes plated. Some of the most expensive consumer items in the world are made from rhodium.

How can one extract rhodium from a catalytic converter?

Extracting rhodium from a catalytic converter involves crushing the converter to a fine powder, then using a chemical process to dissolve the rhodium.
