When the Spanish arrived in California in the 1500’s they found areas they liked and others they didn’t. So, they settled along the coast and built missions, but they didn’t go very far into the interior of California. It was hot and dry with little water and Native Americans living along a lake. There were kit fox, bears, and other small animals in the Central Valley for the Native Americans to hunt and they fished along the Tule Lake. Yet, the Spanish stayed out for the most part.
