It will cause one to blister at a distance, and burn instantly on touch. However, volcanologists have fallen in shallow lava before and escaped with prolonged hospital stays. This is because they were able to get out quickly.

Just like touching a hot stove, the longer you are in contact, the worse the injury, shock is a given, as is scarring, and loss of sensation.

But how cool would it be to roll up your trousers and say "look at these scars. You know where they came from? I tripped into LAVA."
