Colloquially the C.O. is the Commanding Officer of a unit or command.

It can also mean Conscientious Objector, someone whose religious beliefs preclude combat and/or killing. Where they are conscripted or drafted, they may perform alternative civilian service, or serve as medics. As of the Vietnam War, three conscientious objectors have been awarded the US Congressional Medal of Honor.
