Why bother? Carbon 13 is a little heavier than normal Carbon 12, but is chemically identical. Carbon 13 is stable, so there is no nuclear decay to be considered.

To compare thicknesses, 20 mil is equivalent to 20 thousandths of an inch, while 13 pt (points) is equivalent to 13/72 of an inch, which is approximately 0.1806 inches or 18 mil. Therefore, 20 mil is thicker than 13 pt.

The proper terminology is "mil" as opposed to guage. The lowest quality liner currently manufactured in the U.S. and Canada is 20mil. When vinyl liner pools are built, nearly all builders intall a 28mil or 30mil liner. For this reason, among others, the original liner should last10-13 years. Replacement liners are usually 20mil and will need to be replaced within 4 to 7 years. When purchasing a replacement liner, follow these points: (1) Insist on a 28mil liner. (2) The pool must be accurately measured by a professional installer. (not a salesman). (3) Don't believe the story about not making liners heavier than 20mils anymore. Replacement liner sales organizations do not want to sell 28mil liners for two reasons: a. It takes two installers to carry and install a 28 mil liner and it usually takes 1 1/2 days instead of 1 day. b. It will be much longer before you need a new one. The additional charge for 28mil in 2008 should be about $800.00. Good luck with your pool.
