As always the case, what we see is not always true.

Alpha Cenauri is in fact a triple star system, comparison not surprising a, b, and c stars.

  • A is a normal main sequence star - so not low mass
  • B is a normal main sequence star - so not low mass, slightly cooler.
  • C is a red dwarf star - a low mass star

Compare Alpha Centari to the sun?

Alpha Centari is the nearest star to the Solar System's Sun. Alpha Centari is thought to be in the order of at least 4 to 7 billion years old. The Sun's age is estimated to be at the low end 4.6, and thus likely to be much younger. Another difference is that Alpha Centari is really a binary star system, while the Sun is the only star in the Solar System.

How did alpha centauri get its name?

It's the brightest star in the constellation Centaurus. Star names are assigned based on the genitive form of the name of the constellation they're in, with the brighter stars (usually) being given low Greek letter names.

What solar system is Alpha Centauri in?

Alpha Centauri is a triple star in the Centaurus constellation, the fifth brightest star from Earth's view, and the closest star to Earth, besides the sun. Alpha Centauri's coordinates are 14h 39m 36.4951s, −60° 50′ 02.308″.

Is a Vega Star high mass or low mass?

Vega has about 2.1 times the mass of the Sun. That's a fairly large mass; but you'll have to choose where you set the limit between "medium-mass" and "high-mass"! It is definitely not "low-mass"; in general, low-mass stars, i.e. red dwarves, can't be seen with the naked eye, even if they are in our immediate neighborhood. (The very closest star after the Sun is Proxima Centauri, and it can't be seen with the naked eye.) The main definition of a high mass star is a star that can eventually explode as a supernova. For that the star needs to be around at least 8 times the Sun's mass. I would say Vega is best thought of as "medium mass".

Is Proxima Centauri a flickering low intesity star?

Proximus Centauri has a very low average luminosity. It is also a flare star that undergoes random increases in brightness because of magnetic activity which gives the impression of flickering. Because of it's low energy production, Proximus Centauri is expected to be around for another four trillion years.

High mass.

What is the closet star to earth?

Technically speaking, the sun is the closest star to Earth..The next closest known star to the Earth is Proxima Centauri, red dwarf starapproximately 4.2 light years from Earth ... only about 278,000 times as farfrom us as the Sun is. See the related link below for further information aboutProxima Centauri..The next two closest known stars comprise the binary star system called AlphaCentauri. Alpha Centauri is 4.4 light years from Earth..It is postulated that another star, a red or brown dwarf star, closer to the Earththan Proxima Centauri, orbits the sun in a highly elliptical orbit. This possiblestar is code named Nemesis. See the related link below for further informationabout a companion star. That would be the Sun, an average everyday star. The next closest star to earth is Alpha Centauri, which is only four light-years away.

Are white dwarf stars a low mass star?

A white dwarf is the remnant of a low to medium mass star.

What element does a low mass star stop at and why?

Helium. A low mass star does not have enough mass to generate the heat needed to fuse helium.

Is the sun a low mass or high mass star and which stage is it in?

The Sun is a medium mass star in main sequence.
