No. In a displacement reaction, that is exactly what happens. If an element low down in the reactivity series is in a compound, and you add an element that is higher placed in the reactivity series. The more reactive element will displace the less reactive element in the compound.

Example:

Copper Sulphate - Copper is low in the reactivity series and is in a compound

Sodium + Copper Sulphate - Sodium is higher in the reactivity series than copper, and is in it's pure elemental form.

Copper + Sodium Sulphate - The Sodium that is higher in the reactivity series has switched places with the Copper, which is lower in the reactivity series.

FULL EQUATION:

Sodium + Copper Sulphate --> Copper + Sodium Sulphate
