The word 'dilute' is an inexact term.

Hypotonic (less solute) and hypertonic (more solute) and isotonic (the same amount) are relative terms. What they mean is that a solution will either have less, more, or the same concentration of a given solute than the reference substance.

It is important in cells because a hypertonic solution (such as salt water) will try to pull free water out of the cell, where the concentration of salt is less. A hypotonic solution will cause water to soak into the cells. Either situation may be undesirable.

For osmosis, water will flow across a semipermeable membrane in the direction of the pressure gradient. It will always flow from the hypotonic solution into the hypertonic solution. Plants absorb water by creating a hypertonic state inside the root.

What substance should you add to salt water to make it less concentrated?

Add More Salt to make it more concentrated and add more wtaer to make it less concentrated

A semipermeable membrane has an 8 percent salt solution on the left side and a 9 percent on the right side what will most likely occur?

There will be movement of water by osmosis from the less-concentrated solution (left) to the more-concentrated solution (right). Water will tend to flow from a more-dilute state to a less-dilute state.

When a fish use their gills to breath they are taking in a solution of?

They are pulling the water they are swimming in across their gills. Therefore, freshwater fish are taking in a very dilute solution of salt water (> 0.9% salt) while saltwater fish are taking in a relatively concentrated solution of salt water (3-5% salt).

What effects does salt have on water?

No major effects. The salt water and the water join to become a less concentrated salt solution than the salt water but a more concentrated salt solution than the regular water.

Is nitric acid a dilute acid?

Nitric acid can be dilute or concentrated. This is simply a matter of how much of it you have in a given amount of a solution, which is variable.

What is the difference between a dilute solution and concentrated solution?

'Dilute' means LOW and 'Concentrated' means HIGH concentration of solute(s)

Dilute in a sentence?

I will dilute the gravy by adding the milk and heat.

Is the concentration change after you add water to solution?

Adding more solute to a solution will increase its concentration. Adding more solvent will only dilute it. Think of salt water. The salt is the solute, and water is the solvent. Add salt and it becomes a more concentrated solution. Add more water, and it is more dilute. Simple and easy once you think it through.

What happens to potato strip in dilute water?

This depends on the concentration of the salt solution. If the water potential of the salt solution is greater (less concentrated) than the cell sap of the potato cells, water would move into the potato cells, increasing the size of the potato strip. If the water potential of the salt solution is lower (more concentrated) than the cell sap of the potato cells, water would move out of the potato cells in the salt solution, decreasing the size of the potato strip.

What is the difference between concentrated and concentration?

the difference between concentrated and dilute is concentrated is larger while dilute is smaller.

Compare and contrast the properties of dilute and concentrated solutions?

Compare and contrast the properties of dilute and concentrated solutions is because you can dilute you solvent into a solution and then you have a concentrated solution.
