Why do black holes come in different sizes?

Because of their previous history. The star that converted to a black hole may have had more or less mass for a start. Also, a black hole can increase in mass when matter falls into it, so depending on the amount of matter available for the black hole, the results may vary. However, it is not yet known how the galactic black holes achieved the enormous mass they have.Because of their previous history.
