Yes. We know it takes about 15 years for a female nautilus to reach maturity, and she then lays no more than 15 eggs. We also know that every known nautilus population is composed of about 70% males, and that the populations exist in low numbers on Indo-Pacific habitats. Since I began my first field work on living Nautilus in 1975, at least one population - in the Tanon Straits of the Philippines - has crashed from overfishing.
