At the moment there are some research stations there. The ice covering most of Antarctica is, in some places, over a mile thick. The climate is one of the least hospitable on Earth. Vessels cannot land along most of the coastline. There is almost no vegetation.

There were some whaling stations there in the past but they have been abandoned since modern whaling ships are complete processing factories.

The use of Antarctica should be a cooperative effort by agreement of nations. No one government should have control of this continent.
