The Ranfurly Shield, which was first competed for in 1904, was donated by and named after the Earl of Ranfurly who was the Governor General of New Zealand at the time. It is informally known as the 'Log of Wood' and is played for by teams in the New Zealand provincial Rugby competition. To win the shield a team must beat the holder of the shield at the holder's home ground. The current holder is Southland who beat Canterbury in Canterbury during the 2009 season.

Shield volcanoes were named by Mary Dyre of Boston in 1890. After seeing an explosive eruption wipe out her village, she trekked up the mountain and realized that its shape was like that of a shield. Then, a crazed Indian leaped out of a bush and pushed her down into the crater, where there was still a remainder of hot, bubbling lava.Shield volcanoes were named after Mary Dyre of Boston in1890.
Shield volcanoes, so named for their broad, shield-like profiles, are formed by the eruption of low-viscosity lava that can flow a great distance from a vent. They generally do not explode catastrophically. Since low-viscosity magma is typically low in silica, shield volcanoes are more common in oceanic than continental settings. The Hawaiian volcanic chain is a series of shield cones, and they are common in Iceland, as well.

Ranfurly Shield - New Zealand Rugby Union
As of my last update, the record for the most tries scored in Ranfurly Shield matches is held by the legendary New Zealand rugby player, John Graham. He scored a remarkable total of 66 tries during his career, which spanned from the 1960s to the 1970s. The Ranfurly Shield, known for its rich history and tradition in New Zealand rugby, has seen many great players, but Graham's record remains a standout achievement.
